The Basics of Part-time Jobs
As the push for obtaining a college degree has resulted in more and more people enrolling into colleges and universities, the importance of well paying, stable part-time jobs has become quite relevant. This is partly due to the fact that the demographics of college students has changed drastically during the past ten years; many of today’s college students have responsibilities, such as mortgages and child care, that they must take care of alongside their studies. This has, in turn, caused a huge market for part-time jobs—positions that allow students the flexibility to both attend class and make ends meet. What employment options, then, are available to college students when searching for a quality part-time job, and how are they found?
Taking to the streets
One of the most effective ways of searching for part-time employment is to simply get in your car and go to where the jobs are. This could be a shopping mall, a portion of town with a heavy population of businesses, or a busy street with a large number of storefronts. Usually, because employers need their part-time positions filled quickly, the open positions are advertised with “help wanted” signs posted on the fronts of doors or windows—which make for easy to spot job opportunities. Another effective, on-foot technique of part-time job hunting is to use any contacts you may have collected over the years. For instance, if a local business knows you by name because you’re a regular there, ask them about any possible job openings at their establishment, or others that they may know of. Getting your name on the market by way of contacts often proves to be one of the most surefire ways of learning about jobs and landing interviews.
Log onto the web
Though most people never consider it, the fact remains that a huge section of industry is ran primarily by part-time employees—the business world depends on a workforce whose lifestyles demand that instead of careers, they have flexible hours available for part-time positions. Because of this phenomenon, many job search sites have tailored their resources to meet the demands of individuals specifically in search of part-time employment. Therefore, job seekers not only have the resource of having business contacts, but the resource of searching through databases featuring thousands of open positions across the nation. Though the process can be lengthy due to the high volume of available part-time jobs, once the job seeker learns exactly what they are looking for and begins to narrow down their search, they find the advantage of choosing between a number of jobs, rather than just a handful that they found haphazardly.
Get paid
Even though the position may only be twenty hours a week, the volume of work that can be done in that amount of time can still be relatively high. So it’s important to not sell yourself short; request a good wage well above the national minimum and if it’s turned down, then prospects at that employer may not bode well. Having a job is critical, but being paid peanuts just doesn’t cut it—and besides, what other ways will that employer shortchange an employee?
